Welcome to Wow & Flutter (conversations about tape)

Here we chat about cassettes—

  • Independent cassette label releases

  • Mixtapes just unearthed from 1993 that has Linger and What’s Up on both sides

  • The neglected used cassette shelf at your record store

  • Home duplicated harsh noise merch paid for by the same $10 you have exchanged among friends since 2019

We also get into the weeds in these interviews because we are humans, having human experiences around physical music.

I don’t know what the answer is to the state of the music industry, but I am digging my heels into the ground hoping that our shared DIY ethos can keep the whole thing running in real ways.

Who are you?

Hi, I’m Carolyn (Zaldivar Snow), I am a contributing writer at Tape Op, as well as small label Mystery Circles. I also help organize Sound Scene Audio Arts Festival in Washington DC.

Here is the time I brought a mono tape duplicator to the stereo knife fight. It’s fine, going to just publish spoken word tapes that will be very popular. You can follow me on instagram over @tangent_universes and this project over @wowandflutterzine. I’m not great at social media and remain a person and not a brand. Website: This Electric Space.

Subscriptons

Sure— I can set that up in time if you’d like to support my work over here. Otherwise, spend the cash on supporting your local musicians. Go to shows, buy the tape. That’s what this is about.

People

Sometimes I write for small label Mystery Circles, sometimes I freelance at Tape Op. Most of the time I have a hard time writing about myself-- and would rather write about you.
